I have a lot, a LOT, of people asking me what okapi are. Almost every time I introduce myself via my fursona, I get asked what I am or if I made the species myself. I did not. For everyone who has ever asked, or will ever ask, what an okapi is, here you go:

Species Name: Okapia Johnstoni

Common Name: Okapi

Habitat: Democratic Republic of Congo/Zaire (Rainforest/jungle)

Diet: Herbivore; leaves, fungi, grass, etc

Behavior: Solitary, silent; habitats of individuals overlap, but there is very little interaction save for during mating season; babies may whistle, cough, or grunt, but adults seldom make any noise, save for the occasional cough during mating

Zebra/Giraffe Hybrid? NO. The okapi is related to the giraffe (in fact, the giraffe and the okapi are the only two animals still alive in the giraffidae family). The okapi is a sort of forest giraffe, with a similar body type but a short neck for forest foraging. The stripes are used both to help the okapi blend into its environment, and help the babies locate their mothers in the dense underbrush.

Fun facts: The okapi is the only mammal that can completely clean its ears with its tongue. Incidentally, its tongue is 14 - 18 inches long, blue, and extremely versatile. It has the same blood-regulating membrane that a giraffe has, although in the okapi it doesn't serve much of a purpose (obviously); this is one of the things that links the okapi to the giraffe, aside from the obvious physical similarities.

3. I have an astygmatism. This means that light is very bright for me (like, wow, it's so bright here in this...incredibly dark room, sort of bright) and I can't really see perfectly. OH WELL. 8D

4. My favourite color has gone from black, to purple, to gray, to orange. I cannot control when it changes, I literally wake up one day and go "Aw damn, I like purple now? Fiiiine."

5. My favourite movie is Pulp Fiction, my favourite song is Under Pressure by David Bowie and Queen, my favourite band is cake, my favourite book is Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, and my favourite author is Terry Pratchett.

6. I don't wash fruit before I eat it. I live dangerously. D8< And I'm lazy as sin.

8. There are very few Scrubs jokes I won't get. I love that show SO MUCH. I have seasons 1 - 7 on DVD, and once I get the cash I'm getting the final season. LOVE.
